GREENER DELIVERY DRIVES LORRY COMPANY Date : 14.11.07

A HULL-based haulage company is proving its carbon credentials and keeping costs down with investment in its fleet.              1784238

CJ Express, in Southcoates Lane, off Holderness Road, east Hull, runs 12 lorries and has      36,000sqft of warehouse space available for customers.

The company has recently invested in Euro 4 engines and new sloping-roof double-deck trailers, which reduce wind resistance, making travel more efficient.

In total, the company has invested more than £500,000 in new equipment to make it one of the most ecologically sound and efficient hauliers in the area.

It said the moves would help cut its fuel bill, as well as make sure each mile covered causes less damage to the environment.

The change in the trailer roofs alone will slice the carbon footprint of each pallet delivered by more than 40 per cent.

Cath Cooper, Operations Director for the company, is pleased with the move.

She said: "It makes our trailers more efficient, which helps with cost and with our carbon footprint as well.

"It's become a much bigger issue over the past few years and a lot of companies now ask us if we can calculate the carbon footprint of one of our pallets. When we explain our low carbon dioxide emissions and they compare that with our competitors, we are the lowest around."

The lorries are now so efficient, they can even drive in the low-emissions area of London with no charge.

As well as being good for the environment, the decision is having a positive result for clients of CJ Express.

Miss Cooper said: "The more efficient we can be, the cheaper we can run.

"We've always felt that by inward investment of this nature we can make savings far better than companies that don't invest in themselves. So we invest in the best new technology.

"It's our job to be efficient in many respects. We want to avoid empty miles and we work to keep that down to a minimum. We are helped by the fact that our vehicles are so very fuel efficient."

The savings the company makes help to make sure the clients are offered a cheaper service.

Miss Cooper said: "I don't think our clients have seen a price rise in the last five years, and that's even with the increases in the price of fuel."

The company has also been investing in staff and has had five new positions open up in the last year, from traffic operators to warehouse staff.

All the vacancies have been filled by people from the city.
